The Baldwin Machine #4 Production Drill Press is the first portable drilling machine featuring a DC motor.
An electronic speed control precisely administers speeds from 0 - 3600 rpm with the addition of a built-in rectifier. The machine runs off any standard 115 volt A/C outlet. The motor and speed control are calibrated to a dial that enables the operator to simply point the dial to the size of the drill being used to obtain the perfect speed. The Baldwin "dial-a-drill" system takes the guesswork out of obtaining proper speeds for different sizes and types of diameter core drills. The machine comes with a built-in water coolant chuck to supply water under pressure while drilling. The water flows through the water chuck, through the centre of the drill and the only way for it to get out is to flow under the cutting surface of the drill, thus supplying a constant supply of coolant. This process gives maximum drill life, faster drilling and easier slug removal. However, if no water supply is available, the base of the machine acts as a retaining ring. The machine also features an all-aluminum base for weight reduction, stainless steel spindle and handle assembly, all ball-bearing construction and an anti-skid, rubber base.
